4 Ways to be Happy

4 Ways to be Happy

Happy Happiness Day! If you weren’t aware that today, March 20, is officially International Day of Happiness, don’t worry – you’re probably not alone. That’s because it was celebrated for the first time only two years ago, following a resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2011. In it, happiness is described as a “fundamental human right,” with the authors calling for “a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes the happiness and well-being of all peoples.” This declaration, and the spirit and vision behind it, is enough to elevate my endorphin levels – but let’s mention some other ways we can celebrate this important day.

Spend time with family and friends – This may be a bit obvious, but sometimes, when things get chaotic and life gets busy, we end up neglecting those whom we value and love most. Today, catch up and spend time with the people who make you happiest.

Volunteer – It’s been scientifically proven that helping others makes people happy. When we put the needs of others before our own, we usually end up losing our worries and gaining a new perspective. So, pick a cause, pick a place, pick a person – it doesn’t matter! Just get out and help where you can!

Be a kid – Tap into your inner 10 year old and do something silly and fun. Fly a kite, play “duck, duck, goose!” in the backyard, start a pillow fight, or watch your favorite childhood movie (Aladdin, anyone?). And remember that that little kid is still in there.

Get outdoors – Just like volunteering, spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress and ┬ámake us happier. Watch the sunrise, go for a walk, listen to the birds, sit on your porch, or have a picnic. Afterwards, lie on your back and watch the clouds go by.

Pick one or do them all! But why limit yourself to March 20th? Why not every day? Think about what your life could look like if you consistently gave priority to activities that made you – and others – happy. Who would benefit? Who would be happier? You, your family, your friends, your community. Our world!
